King Charles III to meet AI leaders in UK

King Charles III is set to meet leaders of major AI companies in the United Kingdom this week to discuss whether the technology needs a shared set of development principles. The agenda is expected to cover how AI can be used for social benefit while preserving human dignity and supporting the flourishing of people and the planet.

Expected participants include executives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic, alongside the United Kingdom’s Minister for Artificial Intelligence, Kanishka Narayan. The Sunday Times reported that Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang, Google DeepMind founder and head Demis Hassabis, and Vatican adviser on AI Paolo Benanti are also expected to take part.

The meeting comes amid renewed concern over the risks of rapid AI development. Anthropic researchers have warned about the possibility of severe future harms, while CEO Dario Amodei has said companies should slow the pace of model development. Anthropic also published a threat report describing the use of its Claude models in activity linked to weapons development, cyber operations, surveillance and fraud.

The United Kingdom remains Europe’s leader in AI funding and startup activity and has taken a relatively light-touch approach to regulation. The UK’s AI Safety Institute, created after the 2023 AI Safety Summit, receives early access to models under voluntary agreements with major companies to assess their capabilities and risks.
