Generative AI shifts toward agents and focused models in 2027

Generative AI in 2027 is expected to move beyond chat toward systems that reason, use tools, make decisions and complete tasks. Gartner identifies domain-specific models, small models for complex logic, agentic AI and multimodal AI as key forces for scaling enterprise use over the next two years.

AI agents are expected to become central as they move from answering prompts to acting through apps with permission. Meta’s Muse can work across email, calendars, payments, retail and other apps, while multi-agent systems could divide planning, research, validation and execution across separate components.

Smaller and domain-specific models are positioned to gain share by reducing compute needs, lowering costs and improving control. Gartner expects more than 50% of enterprise GenAI models to focus on a specific industry or business function by 2027, compared with about 1% in 2023, supporting uses in finance, healthcare, law and software.

Infrastructure and security will decide which systems scale. Broadcom expects AI chip revenue to reach about USD 115 billion in fiscal 2027, up from its earlier forecast of more than USD 100 billion, while companies face pressure to add identity controls, permissions, audit logs, safe tool access and shutdown systems as autonomous agents gain access to external tools.
