Xbox launches disc-to-digital program for supported games

Xbox has launched a disc-to-digital attestation program after earlier rumors tied the feature to its next-generation Helix console plans. Jason Ronald, Xbox’s VP of Next Generation, announced the program in a post on Xbox Wire, following recent leaks about the company’s digital license strategy.

The digital license attestation program will support ‘most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games,’ letting players claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Series X and launching the game. Once claimed, the game can be played on the console, through Xbox Play Anywhere, and via Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Xbox frames the program as part of a ‘broader commitment to game preservation.’ The rollout also functions as an apparent test run for the Helix console, which is expected to launch with full backwards compatibility despite lacking a physical disc drive.
