UK insurance tech agenda shifts toward AI governance

·1 min read

The UK insurance technology agenda is increasingly centred on AI governance, practical adoption and trust. A CII report warns of an AI “fluency gap” across insurance, saying boards and customer-facing staff need training that goes beyond basic tool use. The report also points brokers toward a specific question for carrier partners using AI, as the FCA’s focus on good customer outcomes pushes insurers to prioritise governance over adoption speed.

Several developments highlight how AI and digital models are reshaping insurance distribution. Gallagher’s Ben Warren argues for ambitious AI strategies that begin with small, focused starting points, while WTW’s insurance innovation head says failed agentic AI pilots are often held back by implementation rather than the model itself. Moody’s says retail P&C distribution faces the fastest AI disruption of any financial services segment and gives most firms 12 to 18 months to adapt under its base case.

Other headlines point to expanding insurtech and risk pressures, including the FCA fast-tracking Urban Jungle’s white-label insurance deal with IKEA and Meshed using technology to support a 10% flat fee. Cyber and professional indemnity underwriters are also watching incidents involving OpenAI and Meta, while data centre submissions face greater scrutiny over climate risk.
