Stanford scientists report AI-designed viruses

·1 min read

Scientists from Stanford University said AI has successfully designed whole genomes for the first time, enabling the creation of new viruses. They described the development as a “significant turning point” that could support new drugs and treatments, while critics warned that the technology could also cause harm.

Other developments included a US court decision fining Meta more than half-a-billion dollars and declaring it a public nuisance over child safety, along with the White House denial that the US faces a shortage of some weapons because of the Iran war. In Mexico, a former governor was arrested over accusations of tampering with evidence connected to the disappearance of 43 students in 2014.

A BBC investigation found that animal dewormer and a drug used to treat scabies are being sold and promoted as unproven cancer treatments. Meredith Kercher’s sister criticised a comedy show by Amanda Knox, who was convicted and later acquitted of Kercher’s murder, and UEFA said a boycott of competitions may still proceed despite FIFA backing Gianni Infantino.
