Livermore Lab to lead 10 Genesis Mission projects
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists and engineers were selected to lead 10 projects in the U.S. Department of Energy’s first phase of the Genesis Mission, a national initiative designed to apply AI to scientific discovery. DOE awarded 278 projects across nearly 350 institutions, including national laboratories, universities, private organizations and nonprofits.
LLNL will also contribute to 19 partner-led collaborations, with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory also taking part in the broader effort. LLNL Director Kim Budil said the selections reflect the lab’s ability to combine AI, advanced computing, experimental science and multidisciplinary expertise to address nationally important problems.
The LLNL-led projects will target areas including nuclear and particle physics, laser-plasma acceleration, materials discovery, Earth system prediction, experimental science, fusion manufacturing, cosmological inference, high-performance computing, metalloprotein design, superconducting microsystems and quantum control. DOE describes the Genesis Mission as an effort to harness AI for breakthroughs in energy, discovery science and national security while building what it calls “the world’s most powerful scientific platform.”
