Teachers lead classroom AI integration

·1 min read

New Turnitin findings show teachers and school administrators are taking the lead on classroom AI use, with 48% of respondents saying they hold primary responsibility for implementation, compared with technology leaders (17%) and cross-functional committees (16%). Educators described uneven adoption across schools and districts, with some teachers eager to experiment and others concerned about classroom control, academic integrity and inconsistent policies, especially in higher education.

Educators said AI tools need to be tailored to classroom needs, including customization for assignments, transparency into student use, time savings and support for scaffolding work. School leaders and analysts warned that teacher-led adoption can be valuable, but districts still need coordinated plans to avoid fragmented implementation.

Turnitin data also showed higher education students in the U.S. submitting writing measured as more than 80% AI-generated at a higher rate than peers in the United Kingdom and Australia. Students most often sought AI feedback during drafting, with 43% using it at that stage and 72% seeking guidance on rubric alignment or improving their papers, raising questions about whether students know how to ask for useful feedback.
