Utah backs Doctronic pilot for AI prescription renewals

Utah has partnered with Doctronic to test autonomous AI prescription renewals for patients with chronic conditions through the Utah Department of Commerce’s Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy. The state describes the program as the first state-approved effort in the country allowing an AI system to legally participate in medical decision-making for prescription renewals.

Doctronic will deploy its AI-native health platform within Utah’s regulatory sandbox, with the Office evaluating clinical safety protocols, patient experience and real-world effectiveness. Utah officials said prescription renewals account for roughly 80% of all medication activity, and the pilot aims to reduce delays that can lead to missed doses, medication lapses and avoidable care disruptions.

The program will measure refill timeliness and adherence, patient access and satisfaction, safety outcomes, workflow efficiency and cost impacts. Doctronic co-founder Dr. Adam Oskowitz said medication non-compliance is responsible for over $100 billion in avoidable medical expenses annually, while state officials framed the effort as a way to support clinicians rather than replace human judgment. Findings are expected to be shared publicly to inform future state and federal AI policy.
