ICO and Deya study smartphone eye imaging for AI support

Deya Imaging has partnered with the Illinois College of Optometry on a sponsorship agreement tied to an AI-based research project at ICO’s Dr. Newton K. Wesley Research Center. The work will use Deya’s mobile-first remote eye monitoring system to collect anterior segment eye images from a smartphone’s high-definition camera and advance the platform as an AI clinical decision support tool.

Deya’s platform combines a patient app with a browser-based Doctor Hub for eyecare providers. Patients can log symptoms, track treatment compliance and capture high-resolution “eye selfies” using an AI voice-guided image capture mechanism. Patient data is processed through Deya’s cloud-based, ECP-trained AI and delivered to providers as weekly progress reports, while clinicians retain control over diagnoses, prognosis, patient messaging and treatment decisions.

ICO investigators will use the smartphone auto-capture system to gather images of anterior segment diseases and contact lens positional findings, then submit them to a HIPAA-compliant cloud repository that stores Deya’s AI training data. The labeling process is overseen by Deya’s Scott Jens, OD, FAAO, and Jovi Boparai, MD, and is intended to improve image analysis for clinical decision support. The project is scheduled to run through the end of the year (2026).
