Zanskar revives New Mexico geothermal plant with a deeper well

Zanskar bought the struggling Lightning Dock geothermal plant in New Mexico in June 2024 after its underground reservoir cooled rapidly and left the facility uneconomical. The water feeding the plant had fallen to 250 °F, below the at least 310 °F it was designed to use, after temperatures dropped by 50 °F over five years.

Advanced modeling showed the existing production wells were tapping only the top of the reservoir and sat in a weak location. Zanskar drilled a new well to 8,000 feet and began operating it in May 2025. After a full year, the well is still producing more than 4,000 gallons per minute, and the plant is running at full capacity again.

The result challenges assumptions that deeper geothermal wells necessarily sacrifice flow as rock becomes more tightly packed. Lightning Dock generated over twice the electricity it would have produced with the old wells, despite being a relatively small plant with a capacity of 15 megawatts going to the local grid, about enough to power 11,000 US homes.

Zanskar sees more potential at the site with further development and a plant upgrade. The company also argues that other conventional geothermal assets may have untapped value if operators revisit them with better modeling and modern drilling methods.
