UMC plans Singapore expansion and new Tainan fab shell

·1 min read

United Microelectronics Corporation has approved a phased expansion plan to respond to rising customer demand. The semiconductor foundry will immediately add cleanroom capacity in Singapore while beginning construction of a new fab building shell at its flagship Tainan campus in Taiwan.

The company said the dual-track approach is intended to serve near-term customer requirements and create the structural footprint needed for future AI and edge-computing applications. UMC said the strategy is designed to reduce future capacity lead times while keeping near-term capital spending aligned with secured, long-term customer commitments.
