EN 18286 sets AI quality framework for EU AI Act readiness

EN 18286, Artificial Intelligence Quality Management System (QMS) for EU AI Act Regulatory Purposes, has been published as a European standard designed to help organizations establish, implement, maintain and improve quality management systems for AI systems. The standard translates EU AI Act expectations into practical requirements, with particular relevance for providers of AI systems classified as high risk.

The framework covers the AI life cycle from design and development through deployment, monitoring, maintenance and continual improvement. Key areas include regulatory compliance strategy, management accountability, risk management, data governance, verification and validation, technical documentation, supplier oversight, post-market monitoring, serious incident reporting and change management.

EN 18286 is presented as complementary to ISO/IEC 42001. While ISO/IEC 42001 provides a broad organizational framework for responsible AI governance, EN 18286 focuses more directly on quality management for regulatory purposes, including operational controls, testing, documentation and compliance activities for AI systems placed on the European market.
