Alqem AI and MPI CPfS team up on magnetic materials
Alqem AI and MPI CPfS launched an AI-driven project on July 19, 2026 to discover next-generation magnetic materials, combining AI-based candidate prediction with physics, materials science and laboratory testing. The initiative aims to shorten the development cycle for materials used in electronics, clean energy, electric vehicles, medical imaging, data storage and quantum computing.
Magnetic materials are critical to motors, generators, wind turbines, energy storage systems and quantum hardware. AI is being used to analyze large datasets, identify promising materials faster than traditional trial-and-error methods and reduce reliance on scarce rare-earth elements. The approach is also intended to support more durable, efficient and sustainable products while lowering research time and operational costs.
According to Precedence Research, the global advanced materials market size is calculated at USD 73.63 billion in 2025, and is projected to hit around USD 78.25 billion by 2026, and is anticipated to reach around USD 134.49 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 6.21% from 2026 to 2035. The collaboration reflects broader investment by governments, research bodies and industry in AI-supported materials research to improve competitiveness, accelerate commercialization and advance low-carbon technologies.
