EU pushes Google to open Android as Wonder and TSMC expand

·1 min read

The European Union issued two legally binding rules requiring Google to open Android more fully to competitors and share search data with rivals. Android phone owners would be able to choose third-party AI assistants over Google’s own, while competing assistants could use anonymized Google search data for search functions. Regulators say Google’s current approach has weakened rival services, while Google has argued that digital rules can harm privacy and degrade user experience. Noncompliance could bring penalties of up to 10% of annual global revenue.

Marc Lore said Wonder will be ready to go public early next year after raising more than $650 million Series D at a $9 billion valuation. The food-tech company has raised approximately $3 billion since its founding in 2018 and operates 135 food halls across 10 East Coast states. The new funding will support expansion into Texas next year, along with investments in robotics and AI.

TSMC said it plans to spend another $100 billion expanding U.S. manufacturing capacity, bringing its total U.S. commitment to $265 billion. The chipmaker reported a Q2 profit jump of 77% and raised its capital spending plan to upwards of $64 billion, citing strong AI demand from customers including Apple and Nvidia.
