Anthropic brings Claude to scientific research

Anthropic announced Claude Science, a new product designed to support scientific research in a similar way that Claude Code supports software engineering. Introduced at an event for pharmaceutical executives, biotech founders, and researchers, the tool can autonomously carry out meaningful work from concise, high-level instructions and includes capabilities for computational biology and drug development.

The company is making AI for science a larger part of its strategy and plans to use Claude Science in its own research on drugs for rare, neglected diseases. The launch fits into a broader push to apply machine-learning systems to drug discovery, where models may help predict how potential treatments behave and reduce dead-end lab work, though the field remains early and claims from some companies remain unproven.

California’s climate policies are also under scrutiny over a program that pays cattle farmers to turn methane from manure into natural gas. Research cited in the briefing suggests the subsidy-heavy approach highlights weaknesses in carbon offsetting and trading systems, shifting climate obligations between parties and regions instead of forcing direct emissions cuts, with the risk of locking in more warming.
