Sheffield AI research draws focus in UK tech growth debate

The University of Sheffield’s Centre for Machine Intelligence is gaining attention for research that connects bio-inspired AI with advanced engineering and regional industrial applications. Professor James Marshall’s work reverse-engineers neural structures in insect brains to help autonomous systems develop spatial awareness while running on low-power silicon chips without constant cloud connectivity.

The research has moved from university labs into commercial use through the spinout Opteran. Within the year, insect-inspired autonomous systems are expected to deploy at the UK’s Sellafield nuclear site, where they will map radiation and inspect hazardous environments.

Sheffield’s role sits within a wider shift in the UK technology economy, where sector output has expanded by approximately 43 per cent this decade. The city is building an “Innovation Spine” designed to support knowledge-intensive start-ups and retain technical talent beyond London’s “Golden Triangle.”

University data shows commercial research has generated 42 deep-tech spinout companies since 2020, compared to 11 between 2015 and 2019. By linking academic research with South Yorkshire’s engineering base, Sheffield aims to help spread the economic benefits of AI-led growth more widely across the UK.
