Garfield AI claims first regulated AI lawyer trial win
Garfield AI says it has helped secure what is understood to be the world’s first court trial victory involving a regulated AI lawyer. The UK firm, co-founded by former City lawyer Philip Young, assisted freelance HR consultant Tamires Camal Taquidir in a dispute over unpaid fees owed by a hospitality business.
Taquidir used Garfield’s platform after earlier attempts to resolve the matter failed. The system helped prepare pre-action correspondence, issue proceedings and support key litigation steps including disclosure, witness statements and trial preparation. The defendant instructed solicitors and brought a counterclaim, while Garfield instructed a barrister at One Essex Court shortly before the hearing.
After a three-hour trial in Wandsworth County Court last month, the court awarded Taquidir £7,000 and dismissed the counterclaim. Garfield, which received SRA approval last year as the UK’s first fully AI-driven law firm, focuses on small debt claims and says its tools are designed for individuals and small businesses that may be deterred by the cost and complexity of litigation.
